Monte Carlo (2011)

Monte Carlo is a film about 3 young ladies who pooled their finances to spend their vacation in Paris but in a twist of fate, was brought to Monte Carlo instead. The movie project stars 3 ladies in the news because they have great television careers, boasting of high popularity among viewers especially the youth. Leighton Meester tackles the role of Meg, Selena Gomez portrays Grace and Katie Cassidy essays the character, Emma.

Three young girls Grace, Emma and Meg chose to spend the money they saved to have the trip of their dream to Paris. It did not turn the way they planned but instead turned out to be a major disaster. The time they made a decision to change the course of their boring and oh-so lousy tour, while trying to enter a five star hotel’s lobby, Grace is thought of as the British Heiress who answers to the name of Cordelia. Grace and her friends want to taste how rich people indulge their vacation and pretend to be the rich heiress called Cordelia. Things got all messed up when Grace falls in love with a guy named Theo. Theo falls in love with her as Cordelia the heiress. The true Cordelia arrives at the 5-star Hotel, and the girls are left to clean their act up.

The Headhunter novel on the other hand is about a woman who wants to go to Monte Carlo in the hope that they may catch a big fish, so to speak.

The project is a takeoff from the novel Headhunters by Jules Bass. The novel is about the story of 4 New Jersey middle aged women who disguised themselves as wealthy scions while looking for rich moneyed guys. On the other hand 4 playboys, the broke gigolos are seeking for rich heiresses and wealthy women in order to obtain money and marry rich women. During 1999, Fox was able to acquire the rights to film the project. This was done three years even before the novel was published. In 2005, Variety, Hollywood’s trade magazine declared that Jez and John Henry Butterworth would be the scriptwriters in the project. It announced that the actor Nicole Kidman had agreed to star on the project as the lead star and likewise to co-produce the project.

The Butterworth siblings were kicked out of job. Tom Bezucha was commissioned to be the director, while co-writing it. On July 2007, Maria Maggenti submitted a copy of the draft of the screenplay. It featured Kidman as the star as ‘one of the Midwestern schoolteachers who decide to go to Paris as rich women in Monaco’. But, in 2010, top executives of the company ask for a revision after deliberating that the project must be starred in by the young exciting ladies.

According to Carlos Alvarez, the new script was written collectively by Bezucha and April Blair and altered the three schoolteachers into two college student and a recent high school graduate. Monte Carlo was filmed in Budapest, Hungary, France, Paris and Monaco .The onset on Budapest was on May 5, 2010 and ended on July 7, 2010. It was the initial use of the film studio Raleigh Studios, Budapest.

Meanwhile Selena Gomez graduated in real life as she graduated from high school in the project. In March 2010 it was declared that Selena Gomez is one of the leads stars after the scripts had been revised. In the next weeks Selena learned to play polo and practiced speaking with a fake British accent. Leighton Meester wrapped up a deal also. Meanwhile Katie Cassidy was cast as Emma in April. Making his first English speaking debut is French actor Boulanger.

The producers of the film were Nicole Kidman, Per Saari, Denise di Novi, Arnon Milchan, Alison Greenspan and Rick Schwartz. The studios they used were The Regency Enterprises and Di Novi Pictures. The editing was done by Jeffrey Ford.

It is being distributed by the 20th Century Fox. It will be released on July 1, 2011 in the United States and the language used is English.

Selena Gomez is Grace, a young, beautiful girl who wants to spend vacation in Monte Carlo. She disguises as Cordelia, a rich British heiress. Grace plays the part well. Leighton Meester is Margaret or Meg Kelly Bennet, Grace’s future stepsister. Meg is an independent girl who knows what she wants in life and risks anything to do it. Katie Cassidy is Emma. She is a high school who dropout who wants to see what life has to offer. Pierre Boulanger is Theo, the love interest of Grace. Luke Bracey is Riley, the love interest of Grace. Cory Monteith is Owen, The love interest of Emma. He is a football player, truck-driver, and follows Emma to Europe. Andie MacDowell is the mother of Grace and Bert Cullen is Robert.
